Independent UK MEP Janice Atkinson, vice president of the ENF group in the European Parliament, condemns the legal challenge to plans to stem the flow of Syrian migrants into the UK:
“I am dismayed that a legal challenge has been mounted against the UK government’s plan to stop migrants being settled into the UK. The UK has shown its humanitarian nature by accepting 7,000 Syrians and it is now time for the Middle East countries to step up to the plate and do likewise.
“It is absurd, given the current crises in the UK in housing, children’s services, the NHS, social services and adoption and fostering services, that social justice warriors of the unthinking liberal-Left seem to believe that it remains the moral duty of the UK to take thousands more migrants.
“Having visited the migrant camps across Greece – and at Calais – and sitting as I do on the committee in the European Parliament that reports on migration and refugees, I do have an insight into what is happening.
“I have also conducted a report into Middle East countries which, shamefully, are doing nothing to help their own people despite sharing the same religion, culture, identity and native region. One of the worst aspects of this moral negligence is the fact that some of the states which do most to foster war, famine and the resultant migrant crisis do the least.
“The EU is complicit in the migrant crisis through its attempts to impose migrant quotas on countries which are naturally resisted by nation states unable to cope. It is time for the Foreign Office to put pressure on the Middle East states to play their full part, rather than simply donating their cash to UNHCR whose mission is then to push the problem into the West.
“I urge the Home Secretary to stand firm against this outpouring of leftist virtue signalling and grief. Instead she should get on with the job of securing our borders and working in government to ensure our own children – whether in schools, health or social care – are looked after properly.”
