Janice Atkinson, the Independent MEP for the South East, today denounced Mr Cameron’s ‘Project Fear’ to scare voters into voting to staying in the EU by saying that France would remove UK border control from Calais back to the UK, along with the Calais jungle migrants.
Refuting this, Janice said, “What Mr Cameron is not telling voters is that the Le Touquet agreement, signed in 2003, is a bilateral agreement between two nation states, and has nothing to do with the EU.
“It would also be commercial suicide by Calais as they have just invested 700m in developing the port of Calais. Amsterdam and Antwerp would love to take this business, and become the gateways to Europe.
“As for Folkestone becoming the new migrant jungle is faintly ridiculous. If we left the EU we would take back control of our borders, enhance border security and be able to tackle the human rights industry, deport illegal immigrants and process genuine asylum seekers quicker, without being hampered by the European courts.
“Lastly, France’s border controls didn’t stop 30,000 of weapons seized by UK Border Force getting through in the last five years, it didn’t stop the largest ever haul of guns seized in Kent last year, it didn’t stop the drugs trade nor people trafficking, UK Border Control did. The people will see through Project Fear.”
